What traceability requires
It has to be a property of how the answer was produced. If a system cannot show which passage, in which source document, justified a given statement, no amount of after-the-fact documentation fixes that gap when an inspector asks.
Where we are today
Altio is at Technology Readiness Level 4, tested in a controlled environment, the aerospace-derived maturity scale we apply deliberately: readiness advances on evidence, not marketing. At this stage, every statement Altio produces already carries a citation back to its source passage, because the architecture was built around obligation-to-evidence matching from the start, not layered on top of a general-purpose model.
What this means in practice
Review becomes checking the work, confirming the cited passage actually says what the system claims, rather than redoing the work from scratch. That is a meaningfully different task, and it is the reason audit-readiness has to be designed in, not bolted on.
